A Private Management Approach to Coral Reef Conservation in Sabah
This report presents the case of a privately managed marine protected areas, the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) in Sabah, Malaysia. It talks about the successes to reduce the common threats to MPAs such as lack of enforcement and limited funding but also the organizational aspects taken by SIMCA. It presents the case of a privately managed area within the context of the different management approaches to MPA (i.e. the government managed and funded approach, the collaborative management and the privately managed approach). Finally, it discusses the advantages and shortcomings of private management in operating an MPA.
