Marine Protected Areas Network Report 2012 - 2018

UK Department for Environment
Food and Rural Affairs

This report provides an update on the current state of the MPA network in English waters, established under the United Kingdom's Marine and Coastal Access Act. Since 2012, the United Kingdom has made substantial progress on its MPA network - also called the 'Blue Belt' - and fifty new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) have been designated. In broad terms, the targets of this large-scale project focus on the conservation of marine species and habitats in the MPA network. The report does not only celebrate the achievements of the Blue Belt, it also recognizes that there is still work to be done to protect the biodiversity of the English waters optimally and shares future plans. This makes the report an interesting case study for MPA professionals working on similar projects.
